Join Justin Anderson and Ryan Lucenkiw, co-founders of popular Facebook group Manitoba Aurora And Astronomy. The group has been at the heart of the recent hype to view the northern lights, but was established to provide a space for learning and connection. Justin and Ryan will discuss how the group began, what is aurora, what causes it, how to see it, and how to photograph it. They will also touch on some of their other favourite night sky topics: the milky way, meteor showers, comets, and the high atmosphere phenomena noctilucent clouds.
Ryan Lucenkiw began to appreciate nature from a young age. Armed with a camera on many camping trips, he began to cultivate a love for photography. In the early days, he sought serendipitous moments, capturing whatever may be found along the trail. As his hobby and passion developed, he began to choose his adventures by what he could photograph. His most notable work includes wildflowers, birds, wildlife, landscapes, and the night sky. From the smallest flower to the sun setting over the world’s tallest mountain to outer space, Ryan showcases a wide range of skills. Ryan’s hope is to inspire others through photography to fall in love with the outdoors.

Justin Anderson is the creator of the active Facebook group Manitoba Aurora and Astronomy, which shares aurora alerts, astronomical events and night photography tips with more than 24,000 members. Justin specializes in landscape astrophotography and more notably, Aurora chasing. On a cold clear winters night you can expect to see Justin in the field photographing the night sky, as well as sharing his experience to Instagram, Facebook, and more recently Youtube.
Justin works alongside the NASA funded citizen science project called Aurorasaurus. There he is able to work with some of the best scientists studying the aurora, then he will take this information back and share it to the Aurora community within Manitoba.
