Wildlife in the Underwater Realm: A Photographer’s Guide to Underwater Photography is an immersive presentation that invites audiences beneath the surface to explore a world few truly see. Drawing from my experience photographing both on Grand Cayman and in Ontario’s freshwater ecosystems, I reveal how light, motion, and wildlife behaviour converge to create compelling underwater imagery. From intimate portraits of curious fish to dynamic scenes shaped by wave and current, this talk explores the artistic and technical decisions that transform challenging conditions into powerful visual storytelling.

In this presentation, I break down the essential elements of successful underwater photography and an understanding of how water absorbs colour and contrast. I share practical guidance on equipment selection, lighting strategies, and how to work ethically and safely around aquatic wildlife. Whether snorkelling in crystal-clear seas or documenting life in our local lakes and rivers, attendees will gain actionable techniques that elevate both creativity and confidence beneath the surface. This presentation also focuses on the use of snorkel gear and chest waders for underwater photography and no need for scuba diving certification or expensive diving gear.

More than a technical lecture, this presentation is a celebration of the fragile beauty found beneath the waves. By showcasing striking wildlife encounters and behind-the-scenes insights, I highlight how underwater photography can inspire conservation awareness and a deeper appreciation for aquatic habitats – an under appreciated genre of photography. Audiences will leave not only equipped with knowledge, but motivated to explore, document, and protect the extraordinary wildlife thriving in the underwater realm.
